French dockers take action against port privatisation

French dockers walked off the job on Monday to protest against the government's port privatisation scheme and to press demands for compensation for workers exposed to asbestos.

The one-day nationwide strike, which was called by the powerful General Confederation of Labour (CGT), paralysed freight traffic at France's two busiest ports, Marseille and Le Havre.

All 1,800 freight workers in Le Havre and most of the 1,500 employees of the port authority walked off the job.

Marseille port officials said that about 16 ships had been prevented from docking at Fos-sur-Mer and Marseille.

Oil terminals and ferry services were not affected.

Under a law pushed through by President Nicholas Sarkozy in July 2008, France's seven major ports are being handed over to private firms.

The CGT has called another national strike for January 11.
