Protesters converged on the White House on Dec. 3—the day President Barack Obama was holding his “jobs summit”—to demand a comprehensive jobs program, not more war. The jobs summit was held just two days after President Obama announced plans for the escalation of the war on Afghanistan. Unemployed people and their supporters came from New York City; Rhode Island; Philadelphia; Boston; and Rochester, N.Y. They demanded a jobs program similar in scope to the Works Progress Administration of the 1930s and 1940s, and described the Dec. 3 action as a stepping stone to larger actions on April 10—the 75th anniversary of the WPA.
