Hewlett Packard workers vote for walk-out to fight cuts

Unite union members have voted to stage a strike on Monday against computer giant Hewlett Packard's (HP) decision to cut benefits in pay and pensions.

Members believe that HP is taking advantage of weaknesses in current employment legislation to remove pay and pension benefits.

The Unite members will join those from Civil Service union PCS who also voted for industrial action earlier this week over pay cuts and job losses.

Further action is also planned for the new year.

"The members have had an irreplaceable pension benefit removed by a cash-rich employer when they had every opportunity to allow it to continue," said Unite regional officer Andy McDowall.

"To add insult to injury they have also removed our members' contractual bonus arrangements resulting in a further cut in wages.

"This dispute would be relatively easy to resolve if HP would agree to sit down and talk with us. We urge them to return to the negotiating table."
